The American Coal Ash Association Educational Foundation awarded $7,500 in scholarships to two university students with interests in advancing the sustainable and environmentally responsible use of coal combustion products. The Foundation also announced new names for the scholarships honoring coal ash beneficial use industry leaders.
Ross Taggart of Duke University was selected to receive a $5,000 scholarship named on honor of former American Coal Ash Association Executive Director David Goss, who was instrumental in establishing the Educational Foundation. Brigitte Brown of University of Wisconsin, Madison was selected to receive a $2,500 scholarship, named in honor of inaugural ACAA Executive Director John Faber, who took the helm in 1968.
Scholarship recipients were chosen from a field of applicants who submitted essays on topics related to the beneficial use of coal combustion products from power generation. A graduate student studying environmental engineering, Taggart wrote about coal fly ash as a potential source for strategic rare earth metals and yttrium, which are critical to the automobile, energy, electronics, and defense industries. A geological engineering graduate student, Brown wrote about public policy initiatives needed to increase utilization of coal combustion products in applications beyond concrete and wallboard. Both students were invited to present their essays at ACAA’s winter membership meeting in Savannah, Ga.
“Increasing the utilization of coal ash in order to prevent its disposal depends on knowledge and creativity,” says Scholarship Committee Chair Dawn Santoianni. “We are proud to help support the next generation of professionals interested in developing safe and environmentally beneficial uses for coal ash.”
Scott Anderson of Houston-based Keystone Structural Concrete, LLC, has been elected American Society of Concrete Contractors 2015-16 president. Joining him as officers are vice presidents Anthony DeCarlo of Cincinnati; Chris Forster of Tustin, Calif.; Mario Garza of Southville, Mich.; and, Chris Plue of San Mateo, Calif. Keith Wayne of Kannapolis, N.C., has been elected treasurer. The ASCC Decorative Concrete Council has re-elected Paul Schneider, Patterned Concrete of Cincinnati, Fairfield, Ohio, as DCC Advisory Board director, and Neil Roach of Danville, Ill., as secretary. The ASCC Safety & Risk Management Council has elected Scott Greenhaus of Columbia, Md.-based Structural as council director of the SRMC Advisory Board for 2015. Scott Winkler, Hamilton, Ohio, was re-elected secretary. Tony Haynes of Burlison, Tenn., and Matthew Rutrough of Rocky Mount, Va., were elected as new directors, joining the re-elected Doug Peters of Lansing, Mich., and Joe Whiteman of Santa Monica, Calif.
Wayne Allen of Putzmeister America in Sturtevant, Wis., has been re-elected council director of the Manufacturers’ Advisory Council Board for 2015. Jeremy Clark of Chicago was re-elected secretary and Craig Dahlgren of St. Louis was re-elected as a director. Matt Basky, Menomonee Falls, Wis.; John Fauth, Madison, Wis.; and Mike Weber, Alexandria, Va., were elected as directors.

ASTM Committee C01 on Cement has presented the Bryant Mather Award to Ash Grove Cement Technical Center Directory Gregory Barger, recognizing his contributions tot he development and improvement of C01 standards, plus advancement of knowledge related to portland and blended cements. An ASTM member since 1988, Barger was named an honorary member of both C01 and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates in 2009. In addition, he serves on Committees C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry and C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units.
